Paper weight, stated in pounds (lbs.), is calculated by weighing a ream (500 sheets) of the basis size (master uncut size) of that paper type. For example, the basis size of bond paper is 17″ x 22″ with a ream weighing 20lbs; the basis size of watercolor paper is 22″ x 30″ with a ream weighing 140 lbs.

The primary color of the product

Acid content determines how long the paper or product will last before breaking down. The acid level is measured by the pH (potential of hydrogen) on a scale from 0 to 14. Acid Free (alkaline) paper has a higher pH (above 7), has a longer life expectancy, and is less likely to discolor and break down over time.

Opacity, based on a 100-point scale, measures the translucency of the paper. For example, if a sheet of paper has 80% opacity, 80% of light cannot pass through. Paper with a higher opacity is preferred for double-sided printing.

Paper GSM (grams per square meter) refers to the paper weight. GSM is calculated by weighing a one square meter sample of the paper (regardless of the length and width of the paper after it is cut by the manufacturer). The higher the GSM, the thicker and heavier the paper.

Caliper, expressed in points, refers to paper thickness. Each point represents a thousandth of an inch. For example, 5 points equates to a thickness of 0.005″.
